STWWC campaigns for accountability in Tanzania's tourism sector. Unprofessional conduct in national parks threatens the wildlife we are working to protect.

Wildebeest crossing at Mara River, Tanzania
A deeply concerning tradition persists in Tanzania's Northern Zone National Parks: some tour guides engage in unprofessional conduct to secure quick profits from tourists. These actions harm fragile ecosystems, endanger wildlife, and have led to the unnecessary deaths of wild animals. Despite the severity, these practices are rarely addressed until irreversible damage occurs.
Documented Violations
The following misconduct has been observed and documented by STWWC in Tanzania's national parks:
1
Letting tourists out of vehicles at the Mara River crossing — this is strictly prohibited for safety and conservation reasons.
2
Harassing or luring wild animals with food or loud noises to get better photographs for tourists.
3
Leaving official paths inside national parks, disturbing natural habitats and animal behaviour.
4
Ignoring park rules and instructions from rangers and conservation officers.
5
Driving excessively close to animals to bring tourists "closer" — dangerous to both people and wildlife.
6
Making noise, playing loud music, or conducting entertainment that disturbs wildlife behaviour patterns.
7
Leaving litter, waste, and rubbish inside protected conservation areas.
8
Incorrect or missing safety measures — including operating without first aid equipment.
9
Selling tours with misleading promises, such as "guaranteed lion sightings", encouraging reckless behaviour.
10
Disregarding animal welfare and conservation principles entirely in pursuit of profit.
